Eurasian Opera opus 3

A Night The Sky was Full of Crazy Stars

2022

Korea Taiwan Kurdistan Russia Japan...

Multilingual voices lead the way to an open square

Ancient tales inscribed with the thoughts and feelings of the people are being performed in an amphitheatre.

A newly departed plane flies overhead, and traditional Taiwanese aboriginal and Korean songs echo through a large housing estate with a predominantly Chinese population.

A Kurdish epic echoes in the evening sky.

We look for stars that should be shining like crazy, far into the night sky of the city. Then you are lured into a labyrinth.

There was indeed an Asian wind blowing there.

The new Eurasian opera, created with traditional music singer Ji Minah from Korea and singer Eri Liao, who is of Taiwanese aboriginal origin, consists of two parts: the 'Chunhyang', which is still a favourite in Korea today, and a poetry play that is a collage of various poems. The souls of the characters in Chunhyang  are haunted by her quiet voice as she sings just a few lines of poetry for more than 10 minutes.

The performance was conceived in Saitama in 2020, the year of the Corona disaster. We hoped that it would be a place of exchange with the Kurdish people living in and around Kawaguchi and Warabi cities, the municipalities with the largest number of foreign residents. This is the space where the new "Eurasian Opera" will be performed. Kurds living in Japan who emigrated from Turkey are not recognised as official refugees by the Japanese Government. Therefore, they have many restrictions on their movement and daily life.
